CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Sal called Robby’s name and Robby Yale and Jud Panetta, who were walking behind the Gabrinis, caught up with the Gabrinis as they all entered the private entrance at the back of the lobby near Reno’s personal elevator, an elevator reserved exclusively for the penthouse. “Yes, sir, Boss?” Robby asked when he hurried up to Sal.

“You and Jud get Dommi downstairs to the dungeon,” Sal said, “and keep him there until we get there.”

“The dungeon?” Dommi asked. “Why do I have to go down there? Where are you guys going?”

“We’re going upstairs to get the ladies comfortable,” said Sal. “Then we’re coming back downstairs, to wait on Mick.”

Dommi frowned. “But why can’t I go upstairs, too? Or I can stay at Jimmy’s place with Mariah and Roni. Besides, it’s not even daybreak yet and he’s not supposed to be here until noon. Why do I have to go to the dungeon?”

“Because Mick might show up gunning for you, fool,” Trina said to her hardheaded son. “That’s why!”

“But the dungeon, Ma? It stinks down there! Why I have to go to that filthy dungeon of all places when I didn’t do anything wrong?”

“Because we say you have to!” Reno butted-in. “Now get your ass downstairs like Sal told you to. And don’t try none of your shit, either, Dommi, or I’ll kick your ass.”

Dommi argued with a lot of people. He disobeyed a lot of people. His father wasn’t one of them. Mainly because he knew Reno would truly kick his ass. Those were never just words with Reno. “Yes, sir,” he said to his father, although he vehemently disagreed.

“And Robby’s in charge,” Sal reminded Dommi. “Not your ass. What Robby says goes. You understand me, boy?”

Sal was another one he didn’t backtalk because of how easily he would backslap him. “Yes, sir,” he said.

“Let’s go then,” said Robby, who was used to Dommi’s mouth, too. But around his father and his Uncle Sal, Dom always tried to be on his best behavior. Robby relied on that as he grabbed Dommi by the arm.

Dommi didn’t resist the arm pull as he allowed Robby and Jud to escort him toward the private elevator on the other side of the lobby that would take them down to the dreaded dungeon, a place where many men visited, and almost as many never saw the light of day again. His old man wasn’t technically a mob boss like Sal and Mick were, but when somebody crossed him, and he had them in that dungeon, he played one real good.

“Let’s get the ladies upstairs,” said Reno as he swiped his keycard at his personal elevator, “then we’re worry about Mick.”

“Oh no, Reno,” said Trina, looking toward the entrance.

“What?” Reno asked her.

“Too late,” she said, and motioned toward the entrance.

Sal and Gemma, Tommy and Grace, and Reno, too, looked where Trina was looking. And that was when they saw him. Mick Sinatra, in his black trousers and black turtleneck, in his flowing white coat, stood alone at the entrance like some kind of world traveler from another place and time, surveying the room.
